Not a private matter: domestic and sexual violence against women in Eastern Ukraine

Gender-based violence is a serious human rights issue in Ukraine that touches on the lives of many people, but disproportionately affects women and girls. Gender inequality, implicit cultural and societal norms and attitudes, as well as gaps in protection and lack of adequate response from the government – all contribute to high levels of gender-based violence against women in the country. This report is focusing on gender-based violence in the government-controlled areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, in particular on how domestic violence against women is aggravated by the conflict, and on sexual violence against women perpetrated by members of military forces.

21st OHCHR Report on the Human Rights Situation in Ukraine

On March 19, 2018 the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission presented twenty first report on the human rights situation in Ukraine. It covers the period from 16 November, 2017 to 15 February, 2018. This report is based on data collected through 276 in-depth interviews with victims and witnesses of human rights violations and abuses, and visits in both government controlled and armed-group-controlled territory. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights call to hold the perpetrators accountable and provide access to justice for the survivors.

CROSSING THE LINE OF CONTACT: MONITORING REPORT

This report provides the results of the August 2018 round of the survey conducted by the Charitable Foundation «The Right to Protection» (R2P) at the five entry-exit checkpoints (EECPs) to the non-government-controlled area (NGCA) administered on a regular basis since June 2017. The EECPs are located in Donetsk (Maiorske, Marinka, Hnutove and Novotroitske) and Luhansk (Stanytsia Luhanska) Oblasts. This period saw a 30 per cent increase in conflict-related civilian casualties – 12 killed and 93 injured.** The majority of casualties were recorded in May to June, with a lull in July and August during the “harvest ceasefire”. Such lulls, however, do not bring relief to civilians living in the conflict zone. On the contrary, the situation remains volatile sustaining an atmosphere of insecurity and anxiety.

Intense and sustained fighting, as a result of the continuing violence by the armed groups and the ongoing security operation being undertaken by the Ukrainian Government, took a heavy toll on the human rights and humanitarian situation in eastern Ukraine during the past month, with at least 36 people being killed on average every day. The number of casualties has more than doubled in total since the last report issued one month ago. As of 17 August, the total number of people killed (civilians, military personnel and some members of armed groups) is at least 2,220 since the fighting began in mid-April. Report on the human rights situation in Ukraine 16 February to 15 May 2018

KYIV (20 June 2018) – There has been no meaningful progress in the human rights situation in the armed conflict zone and other parts of Ukraine, says a report published today by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine. The report covers the period between 16 February and 15 May 2018. The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission documented 201 cases of human rights violations and abuses, almost the same number as in the previous reporting period (when 205 cases were documented). The Government of Ukraine was responsible for 61 per cent of violations, while 17 per cent were attributed to the self-proclaimed ‘Donetsk people’s republic’ and the self-proclaimed ‘Luhansk people’s republic’. The Russian Federation was responsible for 22 per cent of documented violations, all of which occurred in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol.
