Representatives of the Lugansk regional human rights center ‘Alternative’ met three doctors working in hospitals, located in the towns then-controlled by armed groups of the so-called "DPR".

During these meetings, respondents repeatedly pointed out that they had to work under difficult psychological conditions.

"As a doctor I can’t refuse to help the injured. But it was very difficult for me to communicate with so-called defenders, taking their passport with residence in Novocherkassk, Russian Federation and listening to the resentment about the fact that I do not welcome the arrival of militias. In what universe is he militia? He is a mercenary! There was a situation when I walked into the office of their representative with the three cruciform badgeі of the Order on his chest. After my comment on whether it is necessary to wear their awards during a visit to the hospital, he sent me off to the firing squad. Later, however, he changed his mind..."

"Our hospital doctor got back to work from vacation. He liked speaking Ukrainian, he knew it well. He came to the third division, where there was "militia" and started to speak with them in Ukrainian out of habit. They answered with a vague mumble. Then they came to the doctor’s lounge and said that if he speaks in Ukrainian again, they will shoot him in the knee. The next day, the doctor moved out from Donetsk..."

—says a witness.

"My friend, a neurosurgeon, who now works in Kyiv, told me a story. They brought a Chechen with a shrapnel wound on his spine, and the doctor refused to operate him without MRI. So he was forced to operate, with a Makarov pistol held in two steps from his ear"
