In the spring and summer of 2014 the illegal armed groups of the so-called "DPR" shelled infrastructure of Slovyansk, using self-propelled gun called "Nona". Such information was collecteb by representatives of the Luhansk regional human rights center "Alternative" Valery Novykov and Denys Denysenko during the monitoring of the situation with shelling of civilian facilities.
According to human rights defenders, attacks were carried out from different parts of the city, which was at that time out of control of the Ukrainian government, supposedly to discredit the Ukrainian army. At this time, 10 Slavyansk hospitals were severely damaged.
A mine hit the roof of the main building of the Clinical hospital, and in the façade of Children's hospital resulting in a huge hole (by the time all the children were evacuated) in the reception area of a stationary department. Another mine exploded in front of the maternity hospital, so that on one side of the building all the glass is shattered. Shrapnels damaged the roof and windows of the 1st Clinic hospital.
On April 11, 2014 the building of Slovyansk SSU was occupied by the armed forces under the command Girkin (code name "Strelok"), a citizen of the Russian Federation. Stationary departments of the 1st City hospital are located next to the building of the SSU. After the emergency evacuation of patients to other hospitals armed groups have used the hospital to accommodate fighters. They were living and cooking in the hospital's kitchen. At a time when the armed group of Girkin controlled Slavyansk, 16 cars were from health care providers have stolen – 3 ambulances, 1 Ford Transit box-body ambulance, 12 "Niva" cars (20 cars were ppovided for the areas as a result of health care reform).
