Basement of the emergency in Marinka has been serving as bomb shelter health workers and local residents since the beginning of the armed conflict in the Donbass. This was found out during the monitoring of the situation with the shelling of civilian targets by the representatives of Lugansk human rights center "Alternative" Valery Novykov and Denys Denysenko.
"During the shelling, we're in the emergency room, it is a more protected inner chamber, here we have a bomb shelter, and a lot of local people come to us to hide. It is difficult to determine how many people were there at that time. There are three staff members on duty: a watchman, a paramedic and a driver. All of them are instructed, in case of fire everybody goes downstairs to the shelter "
—recalls a witness.
None of the staff and the patients has suffered. Staff at the emergency point knows what to do in case of fire, to back away from the window and open the door to know when the locals come to.
"We are not panicking, trying to immediately assess the damage, check if there is fire and immediately inform those in charge. We have vaccines stored in refrigerators, and when the light goes out because of shelling, we decide whether to take it out or wait. ... The maximum number of people in the basement is 30, including 10 permanent"
—say representatives of the medical staff.
Despite no additional payments and sometimes extremely dangerous working conditions, local GPs don’t give up their job. During the day they work as local GPs, and in the evening they go out to confirm deaths. Helmets and bulletproof vests are the only pieces of security equipment doctors have. In an ordinary non-armored car "Slavuta" with a red cross they provide medical assistance in the entire area, in spite of the attacks.
