Avdiyivka was in the zone of active hostilities from the summer of 2014 to February 2015. During this time, seven shells fell on the territory of Avdiyivka Central City hospital. Even now there are numerous tubes left after the multiple rocket launcher systems “Grad” fell on the territory of the hospital. As representatives of the LRHRC "Alternative" found out, all glasses were smashed out in the traumatology department in August 2014.

The shell flew through the window into the ward and, as a result, the nurse was injured – her finger was torn off. A fragment of the projectile hit the stomach of the who was in the operation ward causing her death.

Complete glazing of the main hospital building was carried out with the funds of the Avdiyivka coke and chemicals plant. But in October 2015, after bombardments recurred, the hospital again was left without window glass. The windows were clogged with plywood and polyethylene.

The hospital consists of two buildings connected by a transition: the main five-story and the other, smaller one. As a result of significant damage caused to the main building right before the autumn-winter period, the hospital administration and city authorities decided to transfer the Central Hospital to the smaller building, in which the hospital operates till now.

In January 2015, the shells fell into the building of the infectious disease department. Shrapnel damaged the roof (now the refurbishment is planned), nutrition unit, morgue and central sterilization department.

In the winter of 2014–2015, there were no lights, water and electricity in the city. Employees of the city administration of the Ministry of Emergency Situations brought technical water to the hospital, whereas drinking water was fetched from wells on the premises of local houses.

Before the control of the Ukrainian authorities was restored over the city at the end of July 2014, it had been controlled by armed formations of the so-called "DPR" for several weeks. During this period, the national treasury departments and the tax inspection did not work, so the hospital staff did not receive wages for three months.

At the present moment, the building of the hospital was included in the list of objects that are subject to prior restoration in Donetsk region, design and budget documentation is being prepared. To help the Ukrainian military on the territory of the institution, a stabilization point was opened where military doctors work together with civilian doctors.

Among the problems voiced by respondents, low availability of medical personnel has an important place: the hospital is staffed with doctors by 30 %, and with other medical personnel by 65 %. For a qualitative and timely inspection, the hospital requires a mobile X-ray machine.

The publication was written in the frame of work of the Coalition "Justice for Peace in Donbass" on the project "The usage of methods and means of warfare prohibited by international law against civilian health facilities during an armed conflict in the east of Ukraine", carried out with the support of the International "Renaissance" Foundation.
