The story of the illegal imprisonment of Andrii Tsvyakh (the name has been changed) attracted many media attention before. During our interview, Andrii shared how he revived from the psychological trauma, caused by tortures and illegal detention.
In 2014, after returning to Kyiv, Andrii suffered from painful memories: every second he relived difficult moments of detention in the basement. Andrii strongly associated a sense of danger and defenselessness exactly with military.Accidental encounters with them could provoke panic attacks:
“It's hard to explain that state of mind. I saw many military people ... there was also Maidan. I saw a military man and I just couldn't look at him. I just didn't want to see anyone in military uniform. "
Illegal detention and tortures in the basement
Andrii was illegally detained in one of the cities of the Donetsk region by the "guards" of the City Council, captured by pro-Russian illlegal formations. They took him to this building, checked documents, and a laptop. Bias, hatred and myths of propaganda played a decisive role in his detention. “There were a lot of accusations against me. That I am a spy ... Another one came in and said that I was a drug addict, and therefore I am "pravosek" [supporter of Pravyi Sektor],” - Tsvyakh describes.
The tortures began the day after his arrest. "DPR" forces transferred him to a military base, and left him in the basement that served as a detention place. "DPR" supporters blindfolded Andrii and tied his hands. A moment after he was able to see who tortured him. All of them wore military uniforms and covered their faces with masks, stay apart from the guards and the military who were in this building.
“I remember the turning point during the interrogation. When I was already lying on the floor, and how they hit my torso with legs ... I thought that I shouldn't be angry. That I could become like them. At that time, it was such an attitude. I didn’t want anger to fill my soul. Actually, it helped me at that moment. "
People outside the bars
Andrii constantly reminded that even those who tortured him had their own fears and motives. It made it easier for Tsvyakh to communicate with them. In the end, the “guards” stopped seeing him as a “pravosek”, “drug addict”, “maidaun”. Immediately after the arrest, fighters of illegal armed groups tied Andrii's hands and wrapped his head with duct tape. Subsequently, they noticed that he was not aggressive, he did not try to escape. They removed the tape and began to talk to him.
Once the guards noticed Andrii's ribbon that was a gift from participants of Euromaidan in Donetsk:
“This angered them so much. But one guy hit me before this ... There was no reason for it, maybe something was on his mind."
The "guards" showed more humanity towards the detainees. Once, in the evening, "DPR" supporters took ten detainees into a tiny room where they could barely fit. They stood there until morning. The new "duty officer" saw this and succeeded in transferring them to a more spacious room. They were also given two wooden doors to keep them from sleeping on the floor:
“We put down the doors, threw some old clothes on top too ... we organized such a mattress for ourselves. Well, the guards gave it to us. Old clothes too. Smelly, but it was ... At least some rags, but it was something you can sleep on. "
At the same time, Andrii noted that the "guards" treated well only those who were in the basement for a long time. The new ones were treated in the same way as Tsvyakh himself at the beginning - they could suffer from ppunishment for any small violation of the "rules", established in the basement.
Homecoming
Andrii returned not only with painful memories from the basement, but also with injuries sustained as a result of tortures. He decided that he wanted to move on from painful scars and memories of the past:
“I understood what I needed, even without the advice of psychologists - I started running. Then International Renaissance Foundation allocated money to send me for treatment in Truskavets. I first climbed Hoverla there. It relieved me further. "
Andrii constantly worked with his traumatic experience, trying to understand the people who arrested and detained him. During his detention, he felt pain because of injustice as "unknown people could detain you, and do whatever they want without any punishment." At the moment Tsvyakh believes that any violence against civilians should not be unpunished. Especially in a society that suffers from war:
“These are three significant layers, to summarize: the work of politicians, the work of people on an interpersonal level, and the responsibility of the military for their actions as well as the punishment for violations of dignity by armed forces. The latter is also important. When a person sees that the military avoids justice ... this [violence] begins to be accepted in society on both sides of the conflict. "
Thorough work on the painful experience has become a part of Andrii's life. His dedication and deligence helped him to revive faith in the victory of humanity and the possibility of mutual understanding between people on both sides of the conflict. It became the basis for a complete recovery:
“Next year I recalled these events less often, not every day - a few times a week. In any case, I have always remembered [the dates of detention and release]. I got up in the morning: "Oh, that was the story, yes." This year - the first time that I caught myself thinking that I forget about it."
